A new grant has been awarded to the University of Akureyri through the Arctic Research and Studies Programme 2023–2026,

Professor Maria Ackrén has been appointed as the new Director of the Stefansson Arctic Institute at the University of Akureyri. Maria will assume her position on May 1st, 2026. 

On 5–6 February, Nansen Professor Dr. Romain Chuffart held a workshop on Legal and Ethical Issues in Arctic Climate Interventions with Prof. Philip Steinberg (Durham University) in Tromsø, Norway.

The Stefansson Arctic Institute and the Environmental Council of the University of Akureyri co-host the 6th Sustainability Conference in 2026 on the 10th of April and will present the second Stefansson Student Sustainability Award, worth 40,000 ISK.

DVM Karl Karlsson has been appointed as a researcher at the Stefansson Arctic Institute for the ICEBERG project, effective from 1 February 2026.
