The Institute has a small but growing library (see complete collection) specialising in Arctic issues, with an emphasis on communities and sustainable development. The library is intended primarily for SAI staff and visiting scholars, but is also open to other interested individuals who may, with special permission, borrow books and other materials.

First edition of The Friendly Arctic (The Story of Five Years in Polar Regions) by Vilhjálmur Stefánsson, published by The Macmillan Company in 1921. Ársæll Árnason published an Icelandic translation of the book in 1938 (Heimsskautslöndin unaðslegu).
