A new grant has been awarded to the University of Akureyri through the Arctic Research and Studies Programme 2023–2026,

Professor Maria Ackrén has been appointed as the new Director of the Stefansson Arctic Institute at the University of Akureyri. Maria will assume her position on May 1st, 2026. 

On 5–6 February, Nansen Professor Dr. Romain Chuffart held a workshop on Legal and Ethical Issues in Arctic Climate Interventions with Prof. Philip Steinberg (Durham University) in Tromsø, Norway.

Last week, partners of the EU Horizon ICEBERG project gathered in Bologna, Italy, at the CNR Conference Centre for the project’s annual General Assembly, held from 20 to 23 January.

The Stefansson Arctic Institute is pleased to announce that Dr. Romain Chuffart has joined the Institute. Having recently secured funding for two international research projects, Dr Chuffart will coordinate both research consortia from the Stefansson Arctic Institute.

The Stefansson Arctic Institute has recently secured funding as partner in two distinct international research projects that address pressing environmental and societal challenges in the Arctic.

This column provides an overview of recent dissemination and fieldwork activities at SAI.

In June, researchers from the Stefansson Arctic Institute—Joan Nymand Larsen, Jón Haukur Ingimundarson, and Helga Númadóttir—travelled to Nanortalik, the southernmost town of Greenland, to conduct fieldwork as part of the WAGE Circumpolar Partnership project.

In May and June, the ICEBERG project returned to Northeast Iceland and South Greenland for its second fieldwork period.
