Enhancing the Role of Arctic Research in Iceland

Climate change has caused the Arctic to warm three times faster than other regions on Earth. This development will lead to extensive changes and challenges in the coming years and decades, which calls for concerted and ambitious actions by the Icelandic government. Iceland has a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of these changes and to use its national knowledge and ingenuity to meet the challenges posed by climate change.

Icelandic universities have considerable knowledge of Arctic issues, especially the University of Akureyri and the University of Iceland, but it is necessary to increase cooperation between all universities in Iceland so that the opportunities that exist can be used to the fullest and ensure that Icelandic researchers and experts communicate their knowledge in international cooperation.

Four thematic workshops will be organized with participation of national researchers.  Special emphasis will be placed on the following topics in the workshops:

  • Adaptation to climate change
  • Ocean research and international scientific collaboration
  • Energy transition and its societal impacts
  • Environmental protection and the sustainable use of resources

The project will strengthen Arctic co-operation in Iceland and increase the participation of national actors in international competitive funds. With increased cooperation and joint efforts, the Icelandic research community will be able to contribute even more strongly to international scientific cooperation and thus contribute to solutions that take into account the special challenges and opportunities of the Arctic.
