IASC Medals are awarded in recognition of exceptional and sustained contributions to the understanding of the Arctic. A maximum of one award is made each year, assuming that there is a nominee of appropriate quality. The award of medals is normally by the President of IASC during the Arctic Science Summit Week (or exceptionally at another major international meeting) following the ratification of the award.

2016 Stefansson Memorial Lecture will be held at Dartmouth College, USA, Thursday, November 3, 2016. Hugh Beach, Professor Emeritus of Ethnology, Uppsala University, Sweden calls his lecture Managing the Wilderness: Arctic Perspectives. On Friday, November 4, 2016 there will be a panel discussion: People, policy and adaptations to rapid change in the Arctic: The role of multidisciplinary research and international collaboration for sustainability.

Two PhD positions are available at Nord University in Bodö, Norway, connected with a new Nordic Center of Excellence project – CLINF.

The sail-off meeting of Nordic Center of Excellence Arctic Climate Predictions: Pathways to Resilient, Sustainable Societies (ARCPATH) took place at Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) during April 11 and 12, 2016.

The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) seeks an Executive Secretary to direct the IASC Secretariat, to guide IASC activities and to manage IASC finances. As of 1 January 2017, the IASC Secretariat will be hosted by the Icelandic Centre for Research (Rannis) at its offices in Akureyri, Iceland.

Norwegian and Icelandic Institutes Lead a New Nordic Centre of Excellence for Arctic Research The Stefansson Arctic Institute, the University of Iceland, and the Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Network are Icelandic representatives in ´ARCPATH´ - a NordForsk-funded Nordic Centre of Excellence in Arctic Research.
