2023 Stefansson Memorial Lecture and Arctic Days in Akureyri. Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Stefansson Arctic Institute

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Stefansson Arctic Institute, we joined hands with the Institute of Arctic Studies at the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College in the US and the University of Akureyri in organizing and hosting the Arctic Days in Akureyri on November 15-17.

New Fulbright scholar at the Stefansson Arctic Institute

Chris Dunn is a Fulbright scholar with an NSF Arctic Research Grant focused on his project, "Applying the Environmental Humanities to Conservation Management and Policy in Iceland." A key aspect of this investigation is the ongoing conflict between conservation and renewable energy development in Iceland's Central Highland.

Ambassador of the United States to Iceland, Carrin F. Patman visiting Borgir

Ambassador Carrin F. Patman and her entourage visited Borgir on October 2, 2023. She met with representatives of institutes that work on Arctic matters in Borgir who introduced their work to her.

Visit by Government Minister Þórðarson, the president of Akureyri Municipal Council, and scientists and experts in Arctic affairs

On September 13 the Institute received several good guests.

A group of from Polar Raid came to learn about the Stefansson Institute and the Arctic.

New Article by Catherine Chambers: Youth and Newcomers in Icelandic Fisheries: Opportunities and Obstacles.

Catherine Chambers and Elena Alessandra Lebedef published the article "Youth and Newcomers in Icelandic Fisheries: opportunities and Obstacles" in Maritime Studies.

JUSTNORTH General Assembly, June 12-14, 2023, in Madrid

Five Stefansson Institute staff members traveled to Madrid June 12-14 to attend the 2023 JUSTNORTH General Assembly. The Assembly was organized and hosted by JUSTNORTH partners at the Universidad Complutense Madrid.

Workshop 16th April at the 2023 European Cetacean Society (ECS) conference in O Grove, Galicia, Spain

The workshop was about Cetaceans with focus on killer whales, encounters and entanglements: human-wildlife interactions in the Arctic and the Iberian Atlantic coast. Organizers were Dr. Marianne Rasmussen, Univ. of Iceland Research Centre in Húsavík, and Dr. Níels Einarsson, Stefansson Arctic Institute. This workshop was an interdisciplinary event with presenters from various fields of research to highlight human-cetacean interactions and encounters seen from different perspectives within natural and human sciences including a discussion at the end of the workshop on policy options and problem solving.
